Our Mission Statement

The 1880 is an online resource, independent from Emerson College, designed to give both on-campus and off-campus students alike an opportunity to connect with events and happenings at Emerson and in the city of Boston. Named from the year Emerson College was founded, The 1880 offers information on parties, clubs, local music and other happenings that share the general interests of Emerson's unique and diverse student body.

The 1880 also offers opinions on films, books, music and games, as well as sharing news from Emerson College and the city of Boston. The 1880 is 100% based on submissions from the student body of Emerson, so if you are looking to share information on an event or club, drop us a line on the contact form (below or on the front page).

At The 1880, we are hoping to unite the students of Emerson in a community based on the sharing of ideas and activities online through such mediums as Facebook and Livejournal. The 1880 is based on the idea of connecting students together in an informative, open, and independent self controlled arena.

The Staff

Brian Moore

Brian has four cats in his hometown of Milwaukee, WI, one of them actually being his: Marshmallow. During his spare time, Brian likes nothing more than to bowl, wander around aimlessly, and drink root beer. He has a very close ladyfriend, his favorite number is 3, his favorite letter is B, and when he looks into the sun, he sneezes. Twice.

Paul Santagada

Paul strongly dislikes writing in the third person. He asked his friend Max to write a bio for him, but all Paul got was an abstraction of his head in profile. Thanks, Max. Oh well, he guesses he will have to do it himself. He likes photo, cooking, beverages, bicycles, and technical miscellany. Oh, and get in touch with him. He misses you.

Mallory Schwan

Mallory is a sophomore double major in Writing, Lit, and Publishing and Theatre Studies. She sometimes lives in the Blackest Hills you'll ever see, and now calls the coast her second home. She can usually be found backstage, in bookstores, meandering campus, being crafty, or looking for inconspicuous places to nap. She enjoys theatre, Boston, the left-of-the-middle, la musica, the politically insane, poetry, rooftops, peculiar human interaction, corners, and general mishaps. She drinks far too much tea.

She thinks you should tip.

Kelly Marchand

Kelly Marchand tells the story of his life: 18,000 years ago in the depths of space, the Sex Asteroid crashed into The Rock n’ Roll Comet. Emerging from the rubble was something so tough, so manly, it was comfortable having a girl's name: Kelly Michael Marchand. Kelly grew up in the suburban paradise of Cheshire, Connecticut. He spent his time there studying theatre, practicing Improv comedy and trying to beat that giant bat boss in Castlevania I. A video production class sparked young Marchand’s interest and led him to the gayest school in the union: Emerson College. Kelly is a Junior TV/Video Major who enjoys making people laugh. His favorite wide receiver is Wesley Welker.

John Baldo sleeps in a circular bed from IKEA with mirrors over it. Some say its sexual, but he simply replies "Its for the ladies, get over it, I'm really good looking." He is truly fascinated with politics, and one day hopes to be President. As for this goal, he states with wide, crazy eyes, "I really gotta get my life together...Holy shit."

Erik Ziedses des Plantes

Erik Ziedses des Plantes was assembled in the year 1987 A.D. in Cincinnati, Ohio. He currently lives out in Allston, on a street that has the word "SLAYER" carved into the sidewalk. Erik will assail you with several pointless facts about music and bands that you probably don't care about. Please don't hold that against him. Just smile and keep nodding, maybe say "yeah" every once in a while. He'll tire out eventually.

Josh Samataro

Josh Samataro is a TV/Video Major at Emerson College. He is also a pile of shit, which is best personified when he eats Twix candy bars for breakfast, which takes place in the afternoon. He is a former columnist and film reviewer for the Lawrence Eagle Tribune, but this lends him no credibility whatsoever. In his spare time, he practices Guitar Hero, sleeps in a bunk bed, and eats crab rangoons. He lives in Cambridge with his wife, Sean.

John Tyson

John Tyson is a place. Or maybe a sound. John talks to his friends in the back of the playground - he says "I'm young, I know, but so what I've been around - and I know there's a space between the plants and the ground I know the stretch between your shoes makes up eternity." See people only shine in death like street lamps coming on at dusk. Or maybe John was just the wind talking.
