Piano Row’s lack of change machines has become a huge problem in my life. Like many college students, I tend to procrastinate doing my laundry as long as I possibly can. Sometimes, when I’m very desperate, I even look back into my laundry hamper and re-wear a dirty pair of socks or shirt. However, most of my poor hygiene habits (at least what I like to believe) can be blamed on my living arrangement. Without change machines in the building, in order to do laundry I must go around the corner to the 7-11, buy a Reese’s cup with a twenty-dollar bill, and ask for five dollars in change. The perky 7-11 staff is generally very excited to do this for me. Then I go back up to my room, grab my laundry, and go back downstairs and load up the washer.
As much as I dislike doing laundry in the first place, the extra step involved, especially in the winter, makes me push my poor hygiene habits to the limit. Don’t get me wrong, Piano Row is a nice place to live, the common rooms are spacious and have yet to be destroyed by years of college tomfoolery. However, it lacks many obvious college dorm necessities like change and vending machines. I cannot count how many times I”ve needed a drink and had to walk to the C-Store, because The Max was closed. I know Emerson has the money, seeing that they just replaced the plastic trashcans throughout the building with heavy duty metal ones, which looks nice to the outside eye, but has no benefit to student life. Simply adding one change machine in the laundry room would greatly improve the day-to-day life of Piano Row residents.
